In every small village and town in the Southwestern Regions of France east of Bourdeaux you will find stone monuments to the brave soldiers who fought in World War 1 (and subsequently in WW2). These monolithic oblisques and stone tablets are a somber reminder of the human toll that was exacted from these now placid, bucolic farmlands amongst the woods and fields. "A Ses Enfantes Mortes Pour Le France" commemorates the youth who died for France, and the promise made by the communities to never forget their sacrifice. I was moved by these ubiquitous memorials and struck by the contrast of the peaceful quietude that nature has bestowed upon a once devastated nation.
